As much as Janette loved to play
in the mountains,
she also loved to give back.
JANETTE HEUNG WAS A ______.
DAUGHTER. SISTER. COUSIN. NIECE.
As a child, Janette could not be described as anything but brilliant; and as for the life she lived, it was nothing less than extraordinary.
While Janette made her family proud through her ongoing academic excellence and professional achievements, Janette touched her family with her generous heart by traveling across the globe to regularly meet with her mom and brother in Hong Kong and exploring the outdoors with them.
FRIEND.
Janette created deep bonds with people everywhere she went. Janette was a community connector, inspiring everyone with her unconditional kindness, enthusiasm, modesty, non-judgmental attitude and fearless spirit.
Janette built a community of friends through outdoor adventures, invitations for a cup of tea, homemade dinners, walks through the woods, creating virtual group calls, artistic endeavors, and contemplating the big life questions.
DO-GOODER.
Janette had a big heart, not only for her family and friends, but also for the community.
Volunteering and giving back was an essential part of Janette’s life. Janette served on The Nature Conservancy’s Young Professionals 13ers Advisory Council, taught ice climbing clinics at the annual Ouray Ice Festival, and co-founded the Unleashed event, a winter climbing community event that features storytelling by community champions with the proceeds supporting outdoor education non-profits.
CLIMBER.
For Janette, mountains were not bullet points in her climbing resume. Rather, the mountain realm was a space for adventure, exploration, soul seeking and connecting with like minded people.
And still, she was known for her fearless ice climbing mindset leading WI5, WI6 routes across North America (Nemesis WI6, Banff, Canada).
Janette put up first ascents in Bolivia and New Zealand. The latter in New Zealand on Mt. Aspiring, she called Thales (WI 5) - “to celebrate life here and now.”
STUDENT.
Janette was a curious mind, always choosing an intellectually stimulating educational path.
It was through her tenacity and commitment to academic excellence that she independently applied to and attended Phillis Exeter Academy. She then went on to pursue a degree in physics and biomedical engineering at Tufts University. Later, Janette earned a Masters of Public and Environmental Health from Harvard’s School of Public Health.
Janette was not only a student of science, but also a student of life, interpersonal communication and self growth.
PROFESSIONAL.
Janette was an avid professional, championing environmental and nature conservancy.
Janette consulted for public, private, and non-profit sector organizations, including Fortune 50 Companies, The Nature Conservancy Asia Pacific, City and County of Denver, and State of Colorado. Janette pursued a career as a Senior Management Consultant at Deloitte Consulting in the Washington DC area and Deputy Director for the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office (“OREC”). Janette’s last professional transition was into the UCAR department (University Corporation for Atmospheric Research) where she acquired the role of the UCP Assistant Director.
